Genre Research: Romance

Romance is in the air!

Some common camera angles and movements that are common in romance movies are high angles, low angles, close- up and extreme close-up. Tracking shot, long shot, medium close up, medium close-up and tilt are also common. Some common sounds that romance movies use are diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound. Dialogue, and ambient sounds are also common.  Some common editing techniques that romance movies use are eye-line match, and shot/reverse shot. Common costumes are regular cloths that people wear every day. Romance movies also use formal dresses, if the actor/characters are going to a ball. They also use it it there are princess romance movies. Common lighting key lighting, back lighting, soft lighting, and motivation lighting. They also use bright lightings. Common acting is that all actors act casually, in love with a person, sad and other emotions. Some common props and sets can be houses, neighborhoods, things that people use in their day today lives are also common in romance films.  Common use of makeup can depend on the actors and their roles.

Some elements that Sarah and I liked was the shots that they used. We also liked how the ambient sounds to set the scene. Sarah and I might use non-diegetic sounds, low angle, high angle, tracking shots, and tilts. Those seem the easiest to use when filming a romance film because those actually help set the scene.

We both do not like the extreme close up. Most people like to see the "in love" phase and the kissing scenes close up but to the point of where we can see the unnecessary details. We also did not like the back lighting. In some of the romance films that we watched there were small details that were specific to the movies that we watched that we also did not like. For example, in Purple Hearts, we both did not like how the Luke's father did not catch on to how the Luke's relationship with Cassie was fake. We both get that it is suppose to be like that, but it was a little obvious that they were kind of acting. We also noticed that it was awkward between Luke and Cassie when they were video calling each other when Luke was at training. But, it was sweet when Luke took the blame for Cassie.

Signing Off,

Kay.
